A Moody Memphis Bungalow Filled With Texture Sean Anderson

Also, thanks to Alyssa Rosenheck and Julie Wage Ross for today’s beautiful photography of Sean’s work and to Micki Martin for the lovely portrait of Sean. I can’t say that one particular project comes to mind; each is vastly different from the next in its own unique way, and that’s what I love so much about this job! Having to constantly flip the script — moving from a dark, masculine bachelor pad one minute to a soft, feminine nursery the next really keeps you on your toes. So, I will say that starting out and having a job built on nothing but gut instinct was a bit of an obstacle, something that I struggled with every day.

Sean and his team work intimately with clients and craftsmen to bring his visionary designs to fruition. Modernist sensibilities provide a foundation while antiquities and curated details imbue and balance. His work is informed, from concept to completion, by the highest levels of quality, integrity, and craftsmanship. He collaborated with the Birmingham, Alabama–based star upholsterer and furniture designer Grant Trick to create the exact sofa he imagined for the space. Anderson placed a cocktail table (he had passed by it in an antique shop for years and finally snatched it up) and placed it alongside the sofa.

Interior Designer Crush: Sean Anderson of Sean Anderson Design

US involvement in the Vietnam War had steadily increased since 1959, with the deployment of combat troops in 1965. Through the University's work-study program, Anderson worked as an assistant to Crombie Taylor, preparing an exhibit of the ornamentation of the early modernist architect, Louis Sullivan, which melded together aspects of both organic and geometric form. The curriculum at the College included numerous electives, and the administration permitted great latitude in the courses that students took. Anderson took numerous courses outside his major, including courses in sociology, economics, and business, and he returned to the USC engineering program to take a course in mathematical topology for non-mathematicians. In this last course, Anderson would have encountered the Möbius strip, since it is a fundamental concept in the study of topology. Anderson's attended public schools and graduated from high school in the Las Vegas Valley.

And then they walk away, within the hour, with a solution. They are so excited and ready to tackle something that they've been struggling with. I love it when clients come back for repeat sessions to tackle multiple rooms, it's so rewarding to know that it's resonating in that way.

The vignette is buoyed by a square chandelier with industrial undertones that once hung in a local factory, as well as an old metal filing cabinet stocked with office supplies. The walls—in contrast to the black ceiling—are finished in Roman Clay to “add a bit of texture and lightness,” Anderson says. This selection includes Sean Anderson’s own contributions to the house—he designed several case goods, the dining table, a sunroom sofa with an incorporated cocktail table, a sofa cocktail table, a wooden wall art piece, and a steel wardrobe.

Texture is a key component of my aesthetic; each space I create is rooted in it. No matter the style, texture is the purest way of creating visual interest without requiring a loud statement to make its presence known.

“I tend to use black in my designs as a way to anchor and balance,” he says of what is definitely his color (he likes a good rust, too). He also has a fondness for the rusted and peculiar of this world—old and new—which he deploys in highly artful fashion, imbuing homes with a regional sensibility but an identity that’s all their own. His work lives at the intersection of rustic and urbane with an au courant edge. I'm incredibly passionate about all of these phenomenal projects I’m working on. They're from one coast to the other, from California to New York, and I’m starting to do some international work. Clients are coming to me with real problems, things they've been working on for months and just can't quite figure out.

I love vintage tables, be it a coffee table, an end table, a little drink table... You can prop your feet up, set your drink down, or drop your mail when you walk through the door. You get so much patina from the wear and tear, and that’s what helps tell a story. I also love old miscellaneous accent chairs sprinkled in, but for daily comfort and use, you need new upholstery.

As creatives, we're constantly forced to do something new and to think outside the box. So anytime I find a brand like Apparatus that is doing something extraordinary and unique, I'm drawn to it. It injects a freshness into an environment that can otherwise be missing. Those rugs have such beautiful textures and offer such stunning colorways.

Sean Anderson took his signature color palette from floor to ceiling in his own home, resulting in a style mashup of moody gothic meets rural country. The dark tones inject the space with mystery and masculinity. Curated objects like animal horns nod to Anderson's childhood and are an expression of the designer's personality. Sean began his design career in 2013 with the formation of his namesake firm in Memphis, Tennessee. Since its inception, Sean and his team have transformed homes and commercial spaces around the country with his enigmatic style and casual, collected aesthetic.

In one of the guest bedrooms (left), Anderson wanted to keep with the theme elsewhere in the house but invert the color story. "I opted to lighten things up but still keep things warm and organic," the designer says. It features a vintage table from Sheffield’s Antiques in Collierville, Tennessee, wall art of preserved insects by Christopher Marley, and wall-to-wall sisal flooring. Built in the early 1990s, the modern-leaning Tudor home has been an ongoing project for years—and still has a few phases left to go, including a major reno where the home will be gutted, the living room will be expanded, and a pool will be installed.

The best way to use BuildZoom is to let us recommend contractors foryour remodeling projects. All licensed contractors in California are required to maintain a bond, which provides you with financial recourse in case they perform defective work or violate license regulations. If you feel as though you have been taken advantage of, you should leave feedback on the contractor's BuildZoom profile and file a complaint with the CSLB.

The show was thrown in Anderson’s own-brand Milan store during Milan Design Week and so well-attended that the crowd spilled out onto via Sant’Andrea. When they could ooze their way in, visitors were greeted by an installation of 37 Carroll pieces, all of them lengths of hand-machined fine gauge knitwear in different yarns, different colors, and bearing different words. In the late 1950s, the family ultimately settled in North Las Vegas, Nevada, where Glen had been stationed at Lake Mead Naval Base, engaged in work related to atomic research at the Nevada Test Site.

In 1966, after completing one year in the engineering program at the University of Southern California, Anderson changed majors and enrolled in the USC School of Architecture, where he studied from 1966 to 1970. He relied on various scholarships — notably from the Graham Foundation, the Architectural Guild of Southern California and the American Institute of Architects — to fund his tuition. He earned a bachelor of architecture degree, magna cum laude in 1970 and a master of urban design degree one year later in 1971. Anderson's father, Glen, left farming and became an electronics technician in the US Navy.

In addition, the CSLB requires all license holders to maintain at least $2,500 in operating capital and provides you with a range of other consumer protections. “I think the ethos of the home itself is rooted in its connection to the exterior, and obviously it played a tremendous influence in the selection of materials,” Sean Anderson says of the design’s dialogue with the outdoors. A son of Tupelo, Mississippi, Sean Anderson credits his origins for strongly influencing his attraction to natural color and texture. I spent my early 20s searching for “my path,” unsure of what my calling was and where that might lead. I bounced from job to job; you name it, and I’ve done it, from stocking groceries and scrubbing toilets to bartending and electrical work.

The homeowner bought the four-bedroom, four-bathroom place with the intention of making it his forever home. For several years, he has collected antiques for it but wanted a refresh. So he enlisted Anderson, who once lived there, to breathe new life into it. “Since we have this history and he trusts me, he really gave me full reign to interpret the house the way I saw fit," Anderson says. "So I made him move out when the time came to redecorate."
